Summary of LED Light Therapy

Red LED light therapy has been around in one form or another since ancient civilizations first recognized the benefits of light therapy.  Ancient Egyptians would often cover the windows of sick people with red cloth to assist in healing.  More recently, medical laser therapy treatments began around 1960, more than 50 years ago. Red LED light therapy which has also been known as low level laser therapy, light box therapy, biostimulation or photostimulation is a “low level” laser light therapy because it is produced at an energy level that is much lower than actual laser light and therefore provides benefits without the high level of training and risk required by actual laser devices. The development of LED Red light therapy has only occurred because the results have proven out through clinical studies that Red Light Therapy actually works.

Why does LED Light Therapy help?

LED Light therapy works by emitting low-level light in the Red and Near infrared (NIR)spectrum from the application pad directly to the skin.  In simple terms the photons from the LED Light Therapy pad are absorbed by the skin and cellular response is triggered.  The result is increased tissue repair and healing. The application of the light is not painful and cannot be felt. Red light can be absorbed into the body to a depth of 8 -10 centimeters. At this depth, the light can have positive effects on cellular activity and energy, as well as multiple nervous system and metabolic process. The red light therapy helps to stimulate the process of cell recovery in tissue and skin through increased blood flow, collagen stimulation, cell regeneration and more.  LED Light Therapy has been the subject of many clinical studies and has shown to have a variety of healing capabilities covering a number of medical applications because of the effect the light has on the endocrine and immune systems.  Low Level Light Therapy (LLLT) is now FDA-approved for treating a wide range of medical conditions.  Light Therapy has been approved for treating medical conditions like slow to heal wounds and recurring or chronic joint pain.

Every color is not the same

Red light has been examined for more than 40 years for its healing properties. In a NASA funded research program skin and muscle cultures grew 150 to 200 percent faster than cultures that were not stimulated by near infrared LED light. Additional laboratory research has shown red LED light can grow human muscle and skin cells up to five times faster than cells not exposed. The development of light-emitting diode (LED) technology has provided a new tool for delivering light deep into tissues of the body and therefore healing properties to more cells.  High powered red light and near infrared light has shown the most consistent and most dramatic results in many studies.

According to some studies just seeing the color red is physically stimulating, primes our senses and gets our blood pumping . Humans see wavelengths as colors. Red light is defined the wavelength of color from 630 nanometers (nm) to 750 nanometers (nm). Infrared is greater than 750 nm to 900 nm.  NASA reported that their research indicated that the wavelengths of 630-800 nm can travel up to 23 cm through the skin by an internal “light distribution system” called meridians.

Red light therapy has been used for treating chronic muscular pain, tendonitis, bruises and cuts, wrinkles and skin discoloration, acne, symptoms of joint pain or osteoarthritis due to aging,  hair loss, neurological damage, and tissue damage (often at the root of tears, sprains or pulls).

Red Light is effective for many ailments

There are many applications for the LED Light Therapy device.  People that suffer from chronic or persistent pain or discomfort have seen benefits.  In addition, those suffering from recent injury can see accelerated healing in just a couple of treatments.

The list of ailments that have seen beneficial results by treatment with LED Light therapy includes:

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Osteoarthritis

Knee Problems

Carpal Tunnel

Tennis Elbow

Bursitis

Muscle Pain

Inflammatory Conditions

Sports Injuries

Sprains

Tendonitis

Ligament Tears

Cuts and Contusions

Joint Pain

Post Surgical Pain

Other pain and injury ailments

Recently Red and Near Infrared light has been studied for it’s effects on the symptoms of both Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. The number, quality and concentration of the LED lights on the Paincare 300 are important to the success of the treatments and we have received reports of improvements from users.  Click this link to read a study on this topic.

Many users feel the beneficial effects after just a couple of treatments.  Regular use of the LED Light Therapy is most beneficial because the effects of the treatments are cumulative.  Often users are able to reduce frequency after a period of time.

What effects does LED Light have on my body?

According to clinical studies and research by numerous medical groups, universities, scientists and even NASA. Red Light Therapy provides a number of specific and general reactions in our body including:

  • Repair and restore damaged soft connective tissue
  • Decrease inflammation to assist our natural healing abilities
  • Improve the natural production of collagen and fibroblasts which is important for skin, joint and digestive health
  • Activating the lymphatic system
  • Forming new small blood vessels (capillaries)
  • Stimulate RNA/DNA systhesis
  • Increasing blood flow and circulation which helps bring more oxygen and nutrients to cells and tissues
  • Lowers the effects of oxidative stress and free radical damage which is associated with the effects of aging

Short list of general benefits

  1. Wound and skin healing and recovery. Red light therapy has been shown to positively affect skin cell cells and accelerate healing of wounds and cuts to the skin through a number of reactions to the red light and the impact on cell growth, regeneration and immune response.
  2. Joint and Musculoskeletal Health. Individuals suffering from arthritis symptoms are seeing relief due to the stimulation of collagen and cartilage rebuilding as a result of red light therapy.
  3. Anti-Aging Effects. Studies have shown that subjects that submitted to treatment of red light therapy showed significant improvement in skin tone, complexion, texture, reduced roughness, improved elasticity and reduced signs of wrinkles as well as increased collagen density as measured through ultrasonographic tests.
  4. Better outlook on life and reduced fatigue. Exposure to red light therapy has also proven to increase some test subject’s overall frame of mind while increasing joy, self- confidence and sensory stimulation. Subjects with depression have also seen improvements with a regular treatment schedule.
